Matthew 5: 38-42 - Jesus is not telling us to be a pushover. He is showing the definition of sacrifice. Sacrifice is a choice, not an obligation. Each example shows an obligation followed by a choice. Christian live in the choice. We should choose sacrifice. Selflessness. It is not a sacrifice if it is done out of obligation. Loving sacrifice is chosen, not demanded by the person receiving the benefit of the sacrifice. Jesus wants us to give of ourselves. This is what separates followers of Christ from others. Others will meet obligations. There is nothing praiseworthy, nothing that lifts us higher when all we do is meet obligations. We shouldn't pat ourselves on the back and point to that as being noble. It is only when we go beyond the obligations that we enter into the kingdom of God on earth. That is where we show the love of God to others. It is in that chosen self-sacrifice that we can glorify God.
Lord, Father - help me to recognize moments when I can choose self-sacrifice for others. I know that I get focused on me and my situations and rarely see the opportunities to selflessly serve others, not out of obligation, but out of love for You and your people.
